Perched along the Bellarine Peninsula coastline, the newly renovated Queenscliff Hotel has reopened as a refined reimagining, blending heritage with craftsmanship.
Following a 3-year restoration, this new stage transforms a historic coastal pub through the considered use of RMS Traders’ natural stone.
Drawing on the Queenscliff setting, the stone brings depth and permanence to the interiors, creating a story grounded in place.
Heritage, reinterpreted
The Queenscliff Hotel was built between 1887 and 1888 by Architects Reed, Henderson and Smart alongside builders Frogley. N and Robsons and Sons, for owners Mrs Martha Nugent and Joseph Gosling.
Archival posters announce “the laying of the foundation stone of Messrs. Nugent & Goslin’s new hotel”, a key moment that marked the beginning of a treasured landmark.
Over the decades, the hotel passed through many hands, each leaving their imprint, with touches of modernisation that allowed the building to evolve with the times.
In 2022, owners Rob and Tammy Charter began their restoration journey, balancing preservation with refinement. The introduction of natural stone by RMS Traders continues this lineage, anchoring the hotel in both past and present.
Shaped in stone
RMS Traders supplied 3 distinctive natural stones, selected to bring depth and character while complementing the hotel’s cabinetry and architecture.

Marquina
Marquina brings a commanding presence. A rich, dramatic stone, its midnight-black tones anchor key areas of the hotel. You’ll find Marquina on the lift floor, featured as the bar countertop and in accents throughout The Boat Bar and Conservatory.
Its dark surface provides a beautiful contrast against lighter finishes, drawing the eye through the space. It emboldens the atmosphere, lending weight and sophistication to the hotel’s social and transitional areas.
Fantasy Lux

Known for its flowing blue-grey veining, Fantasy Lux Quartzite adds a layer of expression and a sense of quiet luxury to Mietta’s Restaurant and to the countertops of Café 1888.
The meandering veins and tonal variations soothe the space, balancing the lighter palette with an elevated element.

Craftsmanship and collaboration
The restoration of The Queenscliffe Hotel was a collaboration of skilled craftsmanship.
he project was led by stonemason Ben Suchanek of Natural Stone Geelong and builder Built by Wilson, using natural stone supplied by RMS Traders.
Each element of design and material reflects a commitment to quality, detail and the value of skill.
As a result, The Queenscliff Hotel renovation breathes new life into this coastal icon, reinforcing its place as a revitalised hub for community and visitors. A space to gather, dine, stay and relax, just as many have before.
Throughout the design, natural stone acts as a unifying thread, connecting past and present while anchoring the hotel as a space of character, luxury and lasting significance.
