Outdoor Living Shaped in Stone

Outdoor spaces are an extension of the home, and the materials we choose play an important role in how they look and feel. Natural stone introduces colour, texture, and pattern, each contributing to the overall aesthetic and atmosphere of a space.

From the bright, open feel of travertine to the grounded appeal of bluestone, each stone can create a distinctly different effect. Here, we’ll explore three RMS Traders projects that show how natural stone selection can shape outdoor living in its own way.

Ashburton Ave

There’s a sense of cohesion in the outdoor design of Ashburton Ave, where Haven Limestone complements the home’s neutral palette. Its soft greige colouring sits beautifully alongside the vibrant greenery, giving the space a relaxed yet refined feel.

Looking closer, the subtle pink-beige undertones in the stone, as well as the gentle shifts in colour, become apparent. These variations add a layer of interest without overpowering the restrained design and allow the subtle details of the stone to stand out.

Suitable for indoor and outdoor applications, Haven’s flamed finish brings a lightly textured surface that makes it a versatile selection for spaces that extend beyond the threshold of the home.

“Haven Flamed features a soft greige palette, blending subtle pink-beige and light grey tones for a balanced and versatile finish.”

Helen House

At Helen House, the irregular shapes of Loden Crazy Paving bring an organic quality to an outdoor space built with strong architectural lines. The contrast between the varied shapes of the natural stone and the clean, white rendered walls adds visual interest and movement to the minimalist setting.

The stone’s neutral colour complements the surrounding area, while its irregular shapes, joint lines and natural-split finish create a distinctive pattern across the space. This stone selection complements the home’s contemporary design, while adding a calm, relaxed natural feature.

Designed specially for outdoor applications, including flooring and facades, Loden extends across the outdoor entertaining area, connecting the dining space, barbecue and fireplace. The final result is a welcoming setting that feels both considered and comfortable, suited to everyday living and entertaining.

Cecil St

Small details have a big impact on outdoor design, and the Tundra Grey Cobblestone paving at Cecil St is a wonderful example. Natural stone is a simple way to bring texture into a space, with the finish playing a significant role in the overall effect.

The outdoor space at Cecil St features cobblestone paving in a split and tumbled finish, offering plenty of texture, while the smaller stone pavers add rhythm and definition to the paved surface.

Unlike larger pavers, cobblestones draw the gaze to the finer details. Their individual shapes and tumbled variations create a visually interesting surface that doesn’t rely on colour or elaborate design features.

While functional, the cobblestone paving has become an important design element in its own right, showing how even the smallest material details can influence the ambience and character of a space.

Shaping outdoor living

Moving beyond colour, pattern and texture, the choice of natural stone can shape how an outdoor space is experienced. As these projects demonstrate, considered material selection can offer a distinct atmosphere and identity to even the simplest outdoor setting.
